2. What properties does it have

As a carboxylic acid ester of fatty alcohol, manufacturers and suppliers think it belongs to a carboxylic acid derivative and contains a carbonyl group. Therefore, high purity tributyl citrate plasticizer is a polar compound with a lower boiling point than the corresponding acid and alcohol. And it is similar to aldehydes or ketones with the same number of carbon atoms. It is volatile and has a fragrance.

Factoies and manufacturers can make citric acid ester react with water to produce citric acid and n-butanol. Its hydrolysis ability is less than that of acyl halides and anhydrides, but greater than that of amides. The catalyst is dry hydrogen chloride, and a strong acid ion exchange resin. Also factories use concentrated sulfuric acid. We call this reaction as esterification. When esterification generates tributyl citrate, there are two possible ways for the dehydration of citric acid and n-butanol molecules. Studies have shown that the breaking of the chemical bond occurs between the acyl group and the oxygen. That is, the water generated during the reaction comes from the hydroxyl group in citric acid and the hydrogen bond in n-butanol.

Esterification is a reversible reaction. When equilibrium finished, there are a certain number of reactants and products. For example, when the same 1 mole of citric acid and 3 moles of n-butanol react in the presence of a small amount of sulfuric acid, when equilibrium occured, part of the citric acid and n-butanol become high-purity tributyl citrate plasticizer. Heating and adding catalysts can only accelerate the reaction rate, but have no effect on the composition of the equilibrium material.

4. How to improve the production and yield of High Purity Tributyl Citrate Plasticizer

In order to improve the yield, factories often add excess citric acid or n-butanol. Or people removed the generated water from the reaction mixture. If the boiling point of the generated ester is very low, manufacturers and suppliers in China can make the ester evaporate. However, the boiling point of tributyl citrate is 150°C, so we evaporated water first. In short, people destroyed the equilibrium to increase the yield. In industrial production, we use excess citric acid to evaporate the constant boiling mixture of high-purity tributyl citrate plasticizer and water. And then people continuously added citric acid and butanol to evaporate tributyl citrate and water for continuous production.

6. Hydrolysis reaction of High Purity Tributyl Citrate Plasticizer

All esters are more easily hydrolyzed in acidic or alkaline solutions than in neutral solutions. Because acidic solutions provide hydrogen ions, they can combine with polar carbonyl oxygen to make oxygen positively charged. So the π electron cloud is more transferred to oxygen. This make the carbonyl carbon positively charged and more prone to nucleophilic addition reactions. Even weaker nucleophiles, such as water, can undergo nucleophilic addition reactions. Without the catalytic effect of acid, the hydrolysis rate of esters is very slow. Manufacturers and factories must heat and add a catalyst for the hydrolysis reaction of esters.

The hydrolysis reaction of esters is a reversible reaction, and people can make the reaction complete in the presence of a large amount of water. Equimolar esters and water form a balanced mixture in acidic or neutral solutions, while in alkaline solutions, since hydroxide ions are strong nucleophiles, once carboxylic acids are generated, they immediately form salts with alkalis, destroying the equilibrium and allowing the hydrolysis reaction to proceed to the end.
