Production conditions
In order to increase the yield of CAS No 77 93 0 triethyl citrate, excess citric acid or ethanol is often added, or the generated water is continuously removed from the reaction mixture.
If the boiling point of the generated ester is very low, we can also distill the ester out. However, the boiling point of triethyl citrate is 150°C, so we distilled the water out irst. In short, we destroyed the equilibrium to increase its yield.
For example, when industrially producing CAS No 77 94 1, CAS No 77 89 4, and CAS No 77 90 7, firstly, we use excess citric acid or alcohol. Secondly, we distill out the generated azeotropic mixture to destroy the equilibrium. And then we add citric acid and ethanol continuously. So, we can continuously distill out CAS No 77 93 0 and water for continuous production.
When generates triethyl citrate and tributyl citrate, there are two ways for the dehydration between citric acid and ethanol molecules.
In actual production, firstly, we use activated carbon-loaded p-toluenesulfonic acid as a catalyst. Secondly, we make ethanol excessive. Thirdly, maintain a certain catalyst concentration. In addition, ensure high temperature reaction temperature. Furthermore, maintain the reaction time for several hours. As a result, the esterification rate can reach 95%.
Production steps of CAS No 77 93 0
We use phenolphthalein as an indicator and determine the end point of the reaction by titrating with sodium hydroxide. After that, firstly, we neutralize a small amount of acidic substances with a weak base. Secondly, we wash the sodium carbonate with purified water. Finally, we decolorize reaction product with activated carbon to obtain pure CAS No 77 93 0 triethyl citrate. There are few side reactions in our company’s production process. These will not only reduce costs but also reduces impurities in the product. After the acid-base neutralization reaction and purified water washing, we removed sodium carbonate. So, we reduced the acid value content of our company’s products greatly. As well as the index is better than the national standard.
